Dr. Johnston received her BSC in Chemistry (summa cum laude) from Mount Allison University (New Brunswick) in 1986 and her M.D. from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in 1990. She completed a five year residency program in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen’s University, qualifying as a fellow in 1995. She then received a McLaughlin fellowship to pursue fellowship training in Urogynaecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at St. George’s Medical School in London, England under the supervision of Mr. Stuart Stanton.

Dr. Johnston is currently a full-time Associate Professor and attending staff member in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a cross appointment to Urology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and is the current head of its Division of Urogynaecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. Since July 2008, she has resumed her position as Ob/Gyn Postgraduate Program Director at Queen’s University, having completed as previous term in this position from 1998 to 2003. She served as Vice-Chair of the Royal College Examination Board in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2005-8) and Chair of the Postgraduate Committee for the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2001-3). She is currently a Deputy Editor of the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada (JOGC).

Dr. Johnston has several active research interests, including non-invasive diagnostic methods for urinary incontinence and the nonsurgical management of urodynamic stress incontinence. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on a number of topics in urogynaecology and menopause.
